Privacy Policy for The Box on the Hill
Last updated: August 2, 2026
Thank you for choosing The Box on the Hill. Your privacy is a priority. This policy explains how the app accesses your Gmail account and how we handle your data.
1. Gmail Access
The Box on the Hill uses Google Sign-In to let you connect your Gmail account, then calls the Gmail API directly from your device to display your messages.
- Read-only scope: The app requests the
gmail.readonlyscope only. It can view your messages, threads, and labels, but it cannot send, delete, modify, or compose email, and it cannot change any account settings. - Direct to Google:Requests go straight from your device to Google's servers. The Box on the Hill has no backend server of its own, and no one other than you and Google ever sees your email content through the app.
- No local storage: Message content is fetched live each time you view it and is not cached, saved, or stored on your device or anywhere else.
- Basic profile info: Google Sign-In may share your name, email address, and profile photo with the app so it can identify your account; this information is used only to operate sign-in and is not stored on our servers.
2. Google API Services User Data Policy
The Box on the Hill's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Gmail data is used solely to display your messages to you within the app and is not used for any other purpose, including advertising, and is never shared with or sold to third parties.
3. Other Data Collection
Aside from the Gmail access described above, The Box on the Hill does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information.
- Personal Data: We do not separately ask for or collect your name, email address, or phone number outside of Google Sign-In.
- Usage Data: We do not track your in-app behavior beyond what is required to display ads, as described in Section 4.
4. Advertisements & Third Parties
The Box on the Hill uses Google AdMob to display advertisements within the app. To deliver and personalize ads, measure ad performance, and prevent fraud, AdMob and its advertising partners may automatically collect and process certain information, such as:
- Advertising identifiers (e.g., IDFA on iOS)
- Device information (device type, operating system version)
- IP address and approximate location
- Ad interaction data (impressions, clicks)
This data is collected and processed by Google in accordance with the Google Privacy Policy and Google's User Consent Policy. Where required (for example, under the EU/UK GDPR or Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework), we will request your consent before AdMob collects data for personalized advertising. You can opt out of personalized advertising at any time via your device's ad settings (e.g., "Limit Ad Tracking" / "Reset Advertising Identifier" or the App Tracking Transparency prompt on iOS).
We do not sell your personal data. Any sharing of data with AdMob is solely for the purpose of displaying and measuring advertisements, and is entirely separate from your Gmail data.
5. Apple Services
Since The Box on the Hill is distributed via the Apple App Store, Apple may collect certain information related to your Apple ID and purchase history. This data is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
6. Data Security
Because your Gmail messages are fetched live and never stored by us, there is no email content on our servers to secure. Communication with the Gmail API uses Google's standard OAuth and HTTPS security, and on-device data is protected by iOS's built-in security features and sandboxing technology.
7. Revoking Access
You can revoke The Box on the Hill's access to your Gmail account at any time via your Google Account permissions page. This immediately stops the app from being able to view your messages.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date.
