# Q5: Series and Parallel DC Circuits

### Find the voltage Vab across the open circuit in the circuit shown in Fig 5.

The 10 ohm resistor has zero current flowing through it because it is in series with an open circuit(Also, it has zero volts across it). Consequently, voltage division can be used to obtain V1. The result is

V1 = 100 * (60 / 40 + 60) = 60

Then a summation of voltage drops around the right-hand half of the circuit gives Vab – 30 – 0 – 40 + 10 = 0. Therefore, Vab = 60[V]
